What is SERP?

SERP is an abbreviation for search engine result page. It is a web page which returned as a search result of any keyword query on search engines.

Let’s take an example to make it more clear.

When a user submits a keyword query in any search engine then search engine return a list of pages as search results and those pages are called as Search Engine Results Page (SERP).


Every web page shown in result against search engine query is a Search Engine Results Page (SERP).

Search engines display many search results against the search for a single query. These results pages are related to user’s search phrases or keywords. Every Search Engine Results Page (SERP) is different from other whether the results as the same query on the same search engine. Also, Every Search Engine Results Page (SERP) are placed in some order based on their ranking in search engines.


However, different types of SERP’s are found in search engines according to their available options such as images, news, videos, maps, sponsored listing, organic search result list and much more. These options presented the particular type of Search Engine Results Page (SERP) in search results.

It is basically an organic search results list which is generated by search engines based on search engine’s algorithm. Besides, Search engines used different algorithms and ways to assign the ranking to distinct Search Engine Results Page (SERP)’s.

Like Google uses Hummingbird algorithm for deciding the ranking of various SERPs based many factors such as website structure, the content of website, backlinks, news, social media presence, free ads, internal linking, targeted keywords and much more. Moreover, There are more than 200 factors on basis of which search engine crawled websites to find most relevant content. Additionally, A website ranking can be increased with the help of search engine optimization (SEO).Many search engines match the visibility of keywords in page title, heading, Meta description and URL of the website with search keywords query to generate an organic listing.

  • Paid Search Engine Results Page (SERP) Listing:

It is opposite to organic listing result which is generated based on search engine’s algorithm. These are usually known as paid or sponsored results. However, Many search engines accept paid listing which guarantees the visibility of site on top in organic search results.

In paid listing, an advertiser pays for placing ads on top of organic search results. Besides, Ads position is decided on basis of ad ranking. However, Ad ranking is decided by AdWords keywords auction, in which advertisers placed to bid for most searched keywords in order to increase site traffic through clickable ads. Maximum bid times quality score decide which ads will be placed on top in search engine results. With help of Google AdWords, you can place your ad on top and decide how much you are willing to pay for the ad on weekly basis.

However, Advertiser has to pay on basis of PPC (Pay Per Click) in paid listing which means for every click on the ad, Advertiser has to pay to the search engine. It is most effective way to increase your site visibility in search engine results.


How does Search Engine Results Page (SERP) look like?

The different search engine has the almost similar format of placing ads or Search Engine Results Page (SERP) listing. Let’s talk about most popular search engine “Google”.

We will see where different ads can be placed in search engine results.

    1. Google Shopping: Now, Google has special option to display the sponsored products right from Google. Once the product is displayed, it redirects to the corresponding website.
    2. Paid or PPC Results: These are top results shown in Search results Page. These results are based upon relevant keywords identified with Yellow or Green Sticker on the top and bottom of the results page. These ads are also linked with cookies once the ad is clicked.
  1. Organic Search Results: In this, high ranking sites appear on top results against searched query. The ranking is decided on basis of different factors such as relevant keywords, the Useful content of website, backlinks, news, social media presence, free ads, internal linking of the website and much more.
